Motorhome FAQ

Don’t motorhomes cost a lot to run?

Most motorhomes are turbo diesels and use fuel very economically. We did a fuel economy run supported by the NRMA and from the 23’ Birdsville, we achieved 11.34litres per 100km over 1500 kilometres – pretty good, (mostly cheaper than towing a caravan). That’s about 25 miles per gallon in the old language.

Do I need a truck licence to drive a motorhome?

Mostly not! Licences are governed by weight, not length, width, height or other criteria (buses and articulated vehicles excepted). A car licence is fine for a vehicle up to 4.5 tonnes GVM so our Escape, Diversion, Birdsville, Eyre, Ceduna and Esperance (most models) models are all OK on a car licence. Our bigger models, Longreach, Nullarbor and Classic all require a MR licence as their GVM is just over 8 tonnes and our Menindee requires an LR licence.

Will motorhomes get into Caravan/RV Parks?

All caravan/RV parks can take most of our model range easily, remember that a caravan and towing vehicle coupled together is far longer than most of our motorhomes. Even our larger models are well catered for by 90% of caravan/RV parks as they realize they risk losing a lot of business if they didn’t. However you don't need to stay in a Caravan/Rv park to enjoy motorhoming as motorhomes are self-contained find a beautiful outlook stay to admire it and wake up the next day.

Are motorhomes expensive to insure?

People are surprised usually, to find that comprehensive insurance on their motorhome is often far less than they pay for their car. As a rule of thumb, the cost to insure a motorhome is about 0.7% of the value and if you insure through Avida Insurance, your contents insurance is increased automatically to $10,000.

Do you have a motorhome that fits under my carport?

Probably not as it seems most carports are about 2.8 metres, but motorhomes can stand the weather and they are best off travelling the countryside anyway.

Can motorhomes tow a car?

Most of our motorhome chassis are rated to tow a maximum 3.5 tonnes subject to the tow ball, and they have the power to do it effortlessly. So whether you tow a trailer, flat tow or use a caddy, our motorhomes can cope very well.

Do you need to tow a car?

Not really. These days, motorhomes drive like cars and have all the electronic gimmicks like cars, so treat it as your car. Sure, you may take up a couple of spots in the supermarket car park or you may have to walk an extra 100 metres somewhere but hey, isn’t that good for you? And the best bit is, when you drive out in the morning to explore the local area and you find a magic spot 100km up the road – well stay there cause you have your food, your drinks, clothing, even your fishing rods. If you leave your motorhome behind and drive out in your car – take a jacket? a thermos of coffee? your rods? And damn, what a beautiful spot but I have to drive back.

What if I run out of Milk?

When you've arrived at your destination in your motorhome you can just drive in and put the kettle on (and maybe plug in 240v if in a caravan/RV park). Compare that to a caravan where you would have to reverse it in to your spot, get it level, pop the roof and put up the annex, lay the fake grass mat, string the clothes line, hang the solar shower and unfold all the folding furniture...

If you're out of milk and it's out of walking distance you could simply put the kettle away and drive off. Imagine what you would need to do to drive off and come back in your caravan!
